Axis Finance, IDBI Bank & IDBI Trusteeship withdraw petitions against Zee-Sony merger at NCLAT: Report

IDBI Bank and Axis Finance had challenged the August 10, 2023, order of the Mumbai bench of the NCLT. NCLT in its approval order had dismissed some applications moved by financial institutions opposing the move, including IDBI Trusteeship, IDBI Bank, Axis Finance, JC Flowers Asset Reconstruction Co, and Imax Corp. Axis Finance, IDBI Bank & IDBI Trusteeship Services have withdrawn their petitions before the appellate tribunal National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) filed against the NCLT order approving the merger of Zee Entertainment with Sony Pictures Networks India. The NCLAT allowed the withdrawal of the petitions noting that the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) earlier this month had already recalled its earlier order of August 10, 2023, approving the merger of Zee Entertainment with Sony Pictures Networks India.

Xiaomi asks Centre to recall antitrust report on Walmart's Flipkart

China's Xiaomi has asked India's antitrust body to recall its report that found the company and Walmart's Flipkart breached competition laws, arguing it contains commercial secrets, two people familiar with the matter said. Any recall of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) report could delay its antitrust investigation, which began in 2021. In a rare move in August, the commission recalled an antitrust report on Apple after the company similarly complained commercial secrets were disclosed. Xiaomi has told the commission in an application the investigation report on Flipkart contains sensitive business data on the smartphone company which was supposed to be redacted when the document was shared with parties in the case, said the two sources familiar with the matter. One of Xiaomi's concerns with the Flipkart report is that it contains its model-wise sales which is sensitive information, one of the sources said.

Citigroup's China expansion plans face delays over pending US Fed clearance

Citigroup’s plans to expand in China have encountered obstacles with US regulators, as the bank has not yet secured a clearance letter from the US Federal Reserve that verifies its regulatory status — a requirement from Chinese authorities, Bloomberg reported. The news report noted that Citigroup was told to address its data management issues in the US after being fined $136 million in July. The penalty has added complications in meeting China’s licensing requirements. Despite these challenges, the New York-based bank remains engaged in discussions with Chinese regulators about setting up the new firm, with no intention to withdraw its application, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the situation. The circumstances remain fluid and may change, the report said. Citigroup reported higher profits for the second quarter this year, driven by a 60 per cent surge in investment banking revenue and growth in its services division. The bank’s net income rose to $3.2 billion, or $1.52 per share, for the quarter ending June 30, compared to $2.9 billion, or $1.33 per share, in the same period the previous year.

Adani project to China: What Sri Lanka President's stance means for India

Known for pro-China leanings in the past, Marxist-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday officially took the oath of office as Sri Lanka's new President, in a development that was closely watched by India, which has significant geopolitical and security stakes in the Indian Ocean island nation. Dissanayake victory in Saturday's presidential election, which saw him defeat several prominent candidates like incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, marks a significant shift in the Indian neighbour's political landscape. The election comes in the aftermath of mass protests that led to Gotabaya Rajapaksa's ousting in 2022. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dissanayake on his election victory and expressed optimism about collaborating with Sri Lanka to enhance the multifaceted cooperation between the two nations. For his part, Dissanayake responded by thanking PM Modi for his "kind" words and support, stating that he shares the Indian leader's commitment to strengthening the relationship between the two nations. "Together, we can work towards enhancing cooperation for the benefit of our peoples and the entire region," Dissanayake posted on social media platform X on Monday, ahead of his inauguration.
